Do you want to be “taken out of use“?
That is just one of the definitions of the word retirement from the Oxford English Dictionary.
I decided a long time ago that I was not ready to be taken out of use and I expect that to remain the position for many years ahead.
I prefer to suggest to friends that their planning should be based around achieving what I refer to as the four freedoms.
FREEDOM OF TIME
FREEDOM OF PURPOSE
FREEDOM OF RELATIONSHIPS
FREEDOM OF MONEY
It has been the achievement of those four freedoms which is enabling me to enjoy my current lifestyle.
After more than 30 years as a financial planner, and having sold my business profitably, it is perhaps not surprising that freedom of money is reasonably in place. That is what enables me to spend my time doing what I love, with people I choose to serve and, I hope, adding some value to their lives.
Few of my clients now enter what used to be a conventional retirement where they are working one day and then the next day never intend to work again. Many are continuing to work in a less stressful environment. Some are creating a new business from what has been a lifelong passion and others are focused on working with and supporting local charities.
Unfortunately, the reality is that all of that needs our money plans to be working well and that means, above all else, PAYING ATTENTION
Fortunately the modern on-line money platforms such as Hargreaves Lansdown make it much easier to pay attention and take control of our pensions and other investments than was the case in the past. Add in some personal guidance and coaching and you could be well on the way to creating your freedom of time, purpose, relationships and money.
