The majority of firms offering financial advice are not being clear about the fees they charge, according to the City Regulator’s latest crackdown on the industry.
Why should anyone be surprised?
Since commission was banned many firms have substantially increased their charges.
No wonder they’re not keen to spell them out!
According to “Which?” the threat to our returns through high charges can be very dramatic. Industry average ongoing charges of 1.67% pa and growth of 6% pa would cost you a whopping £9000 over 20 years on an investment of just £10,000. But total charges from regulated advisers now often exceed 2% pa. Your financial circumstances would need to be very complex to make those sort of charges good value for money.
It’s little wonder that online financial supermarkets like Hargreaves Lansdown are the big winners in today’s world. They have significantly reduced their charges at the same time as financial advisers are increasing charges and hiding them from clients.
But not everyone is confident or knowledgeable enough to make their own financial decisions online.
