The best of the best have a coach (just look at Usain Bolt!).
Financial advice should be no different. Using a coach will give you a far greater understanding of your finances and leave you with more confidence about reaching your financial goals.
You are a specialist in your field. I am a specialist in mine. Which is why, with more than 30 years of experience, I know what works and what doesn’t work when investing to meet certain goals, and I have taken the decision to become a financial coach.
A regulated financial adviser is not a coach. Many of them do a great job but fundamentally their role is to tell you what to do, not to help you make good decisions for yourself. Traditionally advisers did not consider it their role to educate their clients. Many preferred to keep all the knowledge to themselves so that you would need their services forever. It is not by accident that your annual pension statement is full of gobbledygook.
So how does a coach differ from an adviser? The fundamental difference is that a coach’s role is to give you all the help, education, information and guidance you need in order to make good decisions for yourself. This is the way of the modern world. Most of us will go online and carry out our own research before making any significant buying decisions. However some guidance from an expert in the field is often needed as reassurance before the order is placed.
Buying financial services should be no different. All the information and processes are out there if you know where to look. Try Hargreaves Lansdown for their user-friendly service.
I find that approximately 50% of my clients need help in strategising and establishing their online account and can then manage their goals independently. The other 50% are happy to pay for access to an ongoing guidance and support service.
Regulated financial adviser fees have rocketed since commission was banned and are now beyond the reach of many people. Regardless of cost, many more people are finding that the online no-advice platforms, whether or not supported by a guidance service, are the best answer.
