Can you identify something that would motivate and inspire you for the rest of your life?

Why I hate the word “Retirement” Blog Post

Why is it that for some people retirement provides a new enthusiasm for life and for others it leads to a very rapid decline?

I believe it all comes back to something I covered in a previous blog.

One of the definitions of retirement is “taken out of use”.  I certainly did not want to be “taken out of use” so when I sold my business I gave a lot of thought to what my new “purpose” would be.  As difficult as it may be for most people to identify with, I had been in the extremely fortunate position of loving my work and it was not therefore too difficult to decide to use those skills in a slightly different way, which led to the launch of The Investment and Retirement Coach.

Whatever it is I think we all need a “purpose” in retirement and hopefully one which is capable of motivating and inspiring us for the rest of our lives.

The options are endless… It may, like me, involve starting a new business which provides real value to others.  It may be a “cause”, a charity, a hobby, a sport – the options are endless.

Prince Philip retirement – Lessons to be learned?

Another recent blog talked about The Duke of Edinburgh’s recent retirement from public engagements. Does that mean he is “being taken out of use”.  No it does not.  He will still be supporting the Queen, retaining his interest in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, and his passion for carriage driving.

So if you are looking forward to long and happy retirement my plea to you is to find something which is capable of motivating and inspiring you for the rest of your life.

I accept that your genes and luck will have a part to play but I am reminded of a great quote from the South American golfer Gary Player. He said: “The more I practice, the luckier I get”.

So if you want a happy, healthy and rewarding retirement find something that inspires and motivates you and you will have significantly increased the chances of a successful outcome.

A speaker at a conference I was at a few years ago said:- “We ignore the lessons of nature at our peril. In nature things are either growing or dying. There is nowhere in between”.

I’m still looking for opportunities to grow. How about you?

What is it that is capable of motivating and inspiring you? Please leave some feedback below and let’s get a conversation going.
